Keep the declared edition size and a per-copy record together. If you use proofs, describe them consistently wherever the edition is offered.
Edition numbers are a compact way to identify one copy within a declared run. The useful part is the record behind the number: what has been sold, held back, gifted, damaged or set aside as a proof.
Set the edition size before offering the work, and use the same wording wherever the edition is described. If you include artist’s proofs or other special copies, keep those records visible too so the full picture remains clear.
